IT experts share their vetted advice on how they make their inSync setup highly efficient for their end users.
Sure, sometimes vendors share what they believe are “best practices.” But knee deep in the world of getting-things-done, IT admins know what’s most effective for their organizations. So I asked our customers, “What advice would you give to someone who’s deploying Druva inSync?”
Here’s how they’re getting the most out of the software — and how they suggest you might, too:
- Leverage Active Directory rather than using individual manual user accounts — even though Druva uses both, it’s much more efficient to connect with AD for fast provisioning, de-provisioning and mapping groups to policies.
- If you have more than four people on a share, set up a Workspace for them instead. It’s easier to manage and much more efficient.
- Link Druva into Active Directory for easy user setup.
- Sales users do not like to lug around heavy laptops. Install Druva on the salespeople’s laptops and give each of them an iPad with the Druva app installed. The sales staff can view all their local files directly on their iPads and can leave the laptop in the hotel room.
- While giving file exceptions, choose defaults.
- Make sure the node server time is synced with your master server.
- End users store their files in the most unusual places. Know your company’s common extensions (pdf, docx, xlsx, dwg, dxf, etc.) and perform a backup of these extensions on all drives. Restricting backups to “desktop” and “My Documents” leaves a big margin for missed files in a restore process.
- People with more than one laptop can relocate their Documents folder into the inSync Share folder to keep their Documents synced between the machines.
- We created multiple profiles. An initial “default” profile is applied first; it has a small subset of items selected and locks down the settings. Then a mid-level profile gets applied after a week. Last, the final profile gets applied that backs up everything. We also have advanced profiles that unlock features for users who are more savvy.
- Teaching and training your users what type of file/data they should backup helps cut down on storage space and backup time.
- To back up PST files, I recommend you simply back up the folder where the files are stored. The Outlook integration is useful and easy.
- I found that the best way to get synced up initially is to skip all PPT, PDF, and EXE files. Then later, add them back in, one at a time. This lets you get fully protected a lot more efficiently.
- When an end user gets new hardware, simply replace the current device with the new device and restore files to the new device. Simple user migration!
